Im aktuellen Diskurs über die Rolle von Design in gesellschaftspolitischen Entwicklungsprozessen wird ein Augenmerk auf partizipatorische, co-kreative Prozesse und die Befähigung des Einzelnen, kollektive sinnhaft Themen beeinflussen zu können, gelegt. Gerade in Gesellschaftsformen, in denen hierarchische Strukturen Zugänge zu (zB) Bildung, Selbstbestimmung oder Beteiligung an wirtschaftlichen Prozessen erschweren, können einfache Projekt, wie das "Taschenserien für Fair Trade Egypt" Projekt erste Schritte in diese Richtungen darstellen.
Die Produkte, die der Kooperation mit Fair Trade Egypt entstanden sine werden von lokalen Handwerkern aus Leder und traditionell gewebtem Kilim gefertigt. Das durch den GPP e.V. geförderte Projekt zielte auf die Entwicklung von selbstbestimmter Alltagsführung der vorwiegend weiblichen Handwerkerinnen und hatte zum Ziel den Demokratisierungsprozess in der Transformationsgesellschaft Ägypten zu unterstützen.

Eine Zusammenfassung des Vortrags "Local spheres and global surfaces", der im Februar 2012 im Rahmen der Artiparlando Vortragsreihe im Museion in Bozen gehalten wurde, ist in der Publikation "Global Culture Local Views" erschienenen.

Der Text setzt sich mit den Herausforderungen einer globalisierten und gleichzeitig lokal und kulturell verankerten Designausbildung am Beispiel von Ägypten auseinander.

Within the framework of the project “Addressing irregular migration of Sub-Saharan Africans through South Egypt: Providing humanitarian assistance to irregular migrants, while raising awareness and providing alternative livelihoods to Egyptian local communities,” the International Organization for Migrations (IOM) selected the Egyptian Export Council for Handicrafts (EECH) to implement activities that do promote access to alternative livelihoods in selected villages in Southern Egypt. The EECH was established on 13 November 2013, tasked with the goal of promoting Egyptian handicraft with the aim of increasing exports in addition to reviewing and preserving the Egyptian crafts heritage.Within these activities, IOM aims to be gender inclusive and focus on those communities’ members that are most vulnerable, including female-headed household or households with larger number of girls.

Within the IOM funded program we designed a design training workshop with a large number of nubian women working in the fields of weaving/embroidery and beeding techniques. After assessing the local production capacities and individual manual competences we designed and implemented a number of product sketches and production (low)technologies that will support their ideation and production processes in the future.
